A FULL SERVICE SHIPPING BROKERAGE

YEARS OF EXPERTISE

Transportation Data, Inc. (Transdata) is a dry bulk chartering broker in business since 1970. Unlike many shipping brokers that seek to represent both cargo (Charterers) and vessel (Owners) interests’, Transdata specializes in only dry bulk cargo for their clients. Meticulous attention to detail has been the company’s focus all along, consistently resulting in high client satisfaction. Although Transdata is mostly known for handling scrap metal and de-icing salt cargoes around the world, they are poised and ready to handle any dry bulk commodity. One of Transdata’s many strengths is helping new cargo charterers successfully launch themselves into the complicated international dry bulk shipping trade.

Please contact Transdata for additional information about the services they provide. They can help whether you are preparing to make your first dry bulk shipment or if you have made many shipments but don’t feel you are getting the level of service you deserve from another shipping broker.

OUR SERVICES

WHATS SETS US APART

It seems that anyone with a phone and an email address can attempt to be a shipping broker these days, but it requires a lot more to provide five star service. Transdata provides a full range of services to their chartering clients. Continuous market analysis of cargoes being quoted, freight rates being agreed and general market trends is the key to making sure Transdata’s clients’ needs are met and expectations are exceeded.

For some commodities, the cost to ship from point A to point B is such a small portion of the sales price that it might even be considered unimportant in the grand scheme of things. For low-priced commodities that make up the vast majority of the dry bulk freight market, the cost to ship can mean the difference between making a profit and realizing a loss on a sale. Transdata has the knowledge and experience gained in 45 years of vessel chartering and post-fixture vessel operations to help you navigate through the process and maximize your profits. By combining market knowledge with access to the entire dry bulk fleet via their worldwide network of ship owners and brokers, they can find the right ship at the best price given prevailing market conditions. Transdata can also help you determine the optimum cargo size for each shipment BEFORE you make the sale based on port restrictions and tonnage sizes most likely to be available for a given route.

Once a vessel has been chartered, Transdata constantly monitors progress and communicates with all parties involved to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. With 45 years of vessel operations experience, they have witnessed both the right and wrong ways to handle most situations and can offer constructive advice and instructions when a problem does arise. The saying “Time is Money” clearly applies to shipping. A vessel’s value to its owner is measured in dollars per day, or more accurately TENS of thousands of dollars per day. Transdata guides their clients every step of the way to minimize delays and therefore minimize shipping expenses as a direct result.

After the voyage has been completed, the time used for loading and discharging the cargo from a vessel (laytime) must be accounted for. Calculations must be prepared by both Charterers and Owners in order to finalize the voyage and close the books. Transdata handles all of these calculations for their clients, even defending Charterers’ position when disputes arise. Proper laytime calculations and careful analysis of those submitted by Owners has allowed Transdata to save their clients millions of dollars over the years.

OUR HISTORY

Transportation Data, Inc. was founded in 1970 by the late Paul Totten, a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy. Paul’s wife, Ingrid, joined him in the business in 1974 and has been the company’s president since 2003. The business originated in Manhattan as a part of the bustling shipping scene present there in the 1970s and 80s, but moved to the Connecticut suburbs in the late 80s along with many other shipping companies. The company now operates from the small town of Southbury, CT.

Transdata was one of the first shipping brokers to fully integrate the use of computer technology into every aspect of the business, from chartering to vessel operations. An on-site programmer was part of the staff for more than 8 years. During this time, custom programs were written and revised to allow tracking of the entire dry bulk fleet of vessels along with handling the details of each cargo fixed by Transdata.

Currently handling 3 to 5 million tons of dry bulk cargo each year, the Transdata team is ready to handle your next shipping requirement. Please contact one of our team members to get started.
